Longfellow PTA is a not-for-profit, self-governing local unit linked to other local PTAs through the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers and the National Congress of Parents and Teachers. PTA is the oldest and largest association working exclusively on behalf of all children and youth. Founded in 1897, the National PTA has promoted the education, health, and safety of children and families. The Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers was founded in 1904. Its primary goal is to strengthen our family units, our schools, and our communities through parent/family involvement. PTA recognizes parents as the first educators in the home and works to promote parents as partners in the school. What does the PTA Do? Longfellow PTA provides support to Longfellow Middle School to enhance its efforts to educate Longfellow students. We organize volunteers to aid in a variety of school activities and organize cultural enrichment activities. We also provide funding for many educational "extras" that, due to budget constraints, are not provided by Fairfax County. Over the past several years, Longfellow PTA has provided major portions of the funding for computers for our classrooms, the new telephone system, textbooks for every classroom, and staff development. When are the PTA Board Meetings? The first PTA Board meeting will be held on Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the library. The Longfellow PTA Board meets on Mondays most months during the academic year. Our meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. in the school library. Everyone is welcome to attend! Please join us to find out more about what we are doing and what is happening at the school! Check the school calendar before you come to make sure the meeting dates have not been changed. Your membership dues, along with moneys received from the PTA's fundraising activities, support the PTA's efforts to enhance the education of the children at Longfellow. A small portion of your membership dues goes to the Fairfax County Council of PTAs, the Virginia Congress of PTAs, and the National Congress of PTAs. |
