Community Service Opportunities

Groups and organizations will often send notices about or requests for student assistance. These notices get posted on this page, so check this page often for updates. They are listed in the order received, with the date of service and a brief description. Each listing has the listing date at the end. Listings will be removed when the event is over or the need has been satisfied. For the Longfellow Community Service Form, click here and print the page.

These groups need volunteers year round:

Community Service Requirements for Longfellow 8th Grade Civics Students

All 8th grade civics students required hours of community service per quarter. The rules are the same for all civics teachers. Service hours must be recorded in writing with dates and adult signatures. Payment cannot be received for community service.

Members of the National Junior Honor Society have an additional hours of community service for the school year, with a preference for about 5 hours to be performed at Longfellow. The rules for NJHS service hours are the same as those used in civics.

Community service possibilities include, for example:

  • Helping at a hospital, homeless shelter or nursing home
  • Cooking and/or working at a soup kitchen
  • Volunteering with the national or local park services
  • Participating in elementary school activities such as fun fairs and pizza dinners
  • Mailing or handing out fliers for non-profit organizations
  • Collecting items or funds for a charity
  • Special clean-up activities in your neighborhoods
  • Participating in activities at your place of worship aside from direct worship or missionary work. For example, helping in support endeavors (i.e., babysitting during the service, helping teachers, setting up and cleaning up after church dinners, etc.) counts for community service hours.
  • Longfellow opportunities include, for example, helping in the library or at Longfellow's International Night

Service for a business or profit -making enterprise does not count for community service. Helping a parent in his/her office is nice but really isn't serving the community.

The students should clear a service opportunity with their civics teacher if they have any concerns about their service counting as community service.
